4 Local Attractions You Can Drive to Near Lancaster, OH

Lancaster, OH, known for its glass industry and as the birthplace of General Sherman, boasts several fantastic local attractions. Explore the area in a zippy Kia Soul or Seltos, discover notable historical sites, learn more about the skillful art of glass blowing, and admire the beautiful scenery.

1. Sherman House Museum

Sherman House at 137 East Main Street in Lancaster is a historic home once belonged to the remarkable Sherman family. The house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Civil War Preservation Trail, is the birthplace of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his younger brother U.S. Senator John Sherman.

The house dates back to 1811 and has been restored to its original state when the Sherman family lived here. The Victorian parlor is furnished with pieces owned by the Shermans and includes antiques from General Ulysses S. and Julia Grant. The upstairs bedrooms display family memorabilia and a re-creation of the General's Civil War field tent with personal items he used during the war.

2. Rock Mill Covered Bridge

The Rock Mill Covered Bridge, originally built in 1849 on a transportation route from Detroit at 1429 Rockmill Road NW in Lancaster, may be the county's shortest bridge, but it is one of the last mill and covered bridge combinations in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1901, Jacob R. "Blue Jeans" Brandt, a local Fairfield County resident, built the current bridge that spans 30 feet over the Hocking River and rests on its original supports 35 feet above the gorge. Even though more than a century has passed since its construction, the bridge still stands as a testament to Brandt's exceptional craftsmanship.

3. Ohio Glass Museum

The Ohio Glass Museum at 124 West Main Street in Lancaster preserves the area's rich history and tradition of glassmaking. The museum's guided tour includes a display of the history of glass from when it was first discovered and a special exhibit of collector's glass, some from the museum's own collection.

You can also watch glass-blowing and flame-working demonstrations, try blowing glass yourself, and sign up for a formal class. Glass-blowing is a skillful art that takes years to master, and many of the exquisite glass pieces and selections in the gift shop were blown in the museum's studio.

4. Charles Alley Nature Park
